Fiberglass vs. Graphite Paddles, what’s the difference?

Fiberglass paddles often weigh a little more that graphite paddles. Because they are a little heavier than graphite paddles, fiberglass paddles are considered to have more power. Graphite paddles are considered to have more control or finesse. Both graphite and fiberglass paddles are lightweight and strong. There is a general perception that graphite is better but no one has studied if there is a difference in how the ball comes off a graphite vs. fiberglass paddle.
What do you think? Is there a difference between to two paddle face materials?  – anna

  1. Had just bought a ‘Impact Graphite’ paddle and was liking it once I covered the handle to make a larger grip area. The bad part is I swung at ai very low hit ball and caught the floor with edge of paddle breaking the inner core about an inch in and maybe three inches across. For that reason I am a little frustrated with the construction strength of this model. I have not played with a fiberglass paddle so have no way to compare the two materials. Would ‘think’ fiberglass might be more sturdy but not sure.

    • The paddle face’s job is to protect the paddle core. It sound to me like the face on your Impact Graphite fractured.

      I’m guessing that your Impact Graphite paddle broke due to the brittleness of the carbon face.* It’s impossible to know if a fiberglass version of the paddle would have survived the blow.

      We have not had any similar issues with the Impact Graphite paddle. I think your incident was unique and very unfortunate!

      The paddles aren’t manufactured to survive forceful contact with a solid object. The most durable of all paddles are the plywood paddles, but they are extremely heavy and don’t have the pop of a honeycomb core paddle. – Anna

      *Footnote: Graphite is more brittle than fiberglass. Graphite is made from small strands of carbon atoms that are combined into bigger strands and woven together to form an incredibly durable and lightweight material. Fiberglass is made of small glass fibers that are connected together to form a material. The carbon strands are shorter than the fiberglass strands, thus making them more brittle.
